Sugar Loaf Cable Car (RJ) and its connections among people, nature and arts

Hello, my dear ones!

In February I went to Sugar Loaf Cable Car which is a cableway, in Rio de Janeiro. Wow, that’s really it! Carioca, doing carioca stuff and, by the way, I hadn’t visited it yet. It’s located in Urca neighborhood which is such a charming place here in the wonderful city.

Have you ever come across an awe-inspiring sight, where a smile comes out of the blue on your face? The cable car ascent felt like that and then I realized it had already arrived at the first stop. As soon as we got there, on Urca’s mountain, we bumped into “Sugar loaf carnival parade”, where the activities were bringing joy to the environment and cheering up the people. And, through this exciting moment, I was amazed to see from above Rio de Janeiro’s main beaches from the South region and the shape of the city.

The park is full of natural beauties and takes the initiative to preserve the fauna and flora that inhabit the place. It’s possible to see a connection between nature and arts in its stations that is one of the main touristic attractions of the city. Moreover, I was stunned by the painted huge walls.

The images and the colors arranged in these paintings intend to bring more art and environmental awareness to people who have been there, according to an article from Rio’s Journal on October 29th, 2021. Still on the article, the Sugar Loaf Cable Car’s CEO Sandro Fernandes, also mentions the unique and remarkable paintings from the artist, Bruno Big, as well as the legacy that will linger on and the inspiration to act often upon the development of a society more engaged with environmental issues.

On those walls we can observe features from the Brazilian fauna and flora artistically portrayed in more than 750m22 of outdoor walls, promoting a challenging work to the artist Bruno Carneiro Mosciaro, aiming at the tropical climate in which we live.

Rising a bit more through a second cable car towards the Sugar Loaf mountain (I’d like to point out that by taking the cable cars, the tickets were required both at the entrance and at the exit), I wanted to visit the Urca Classic Sunset Club, which has a breathtaking view of the city and it also offers fancy meals, but unfortunately, due to the altitude, there were plenty of clouds in the twilight that prevented us from seeing the landscape properly on that spot. When it comes to the restaurant order, I chose truffled salmon tartare along with yam chips, which I love. They were absolutely delicious.

Getting back at Urca’s mountain, I entered the exhibition “The story of a thread” whose storyline is about the foundation of the Sugar Loaf Cable Car, in 1912, up to now. A quote drew my attention and I’ll share that with you all to promote reflection:

“Life is not what we’ve lived but rather what we remember, and how you remember to tell it to anyone”

Gabriel García Marques

In general, this tour may last two hours and a half or even more, it depends on your availability. Do not miss out on the Sugar Loaf Cable Car touristic park and seize the opportunity to sit down on a little bench and contemplate the city, nature and its arts. Moreover, I added some delicious ice cream to that moment and I finished the day in the best way possible. On my Instagram page @analicetozetti you can find more pictures and an exclusive highlight for that day.

Useful information for the ones who intend to meet this attraction: It’s located on Pasteur Avenue, 520, Urca (RJ), and the tickets can be purchased on their own website. The “Carioca Maravilha” tickets provide 50% of discount for the ones who were born or live in Rio de Janeiro, and the price goes from R$120,00 to R$60,00.

In case you can’t go on the scheduled day, like it happened to me, the tickets are valid for 7 days, from the previously established date, except for tickets with the tour included since they have pre-scheduled date and time. The Sugar Loaf Cable Car is open every day from 09h to 20h and visitors entrance goes up to 19h. It’s important to remind you that my visit there took place in 2022 during the first semester, and I was asked to provide proof of vaccination and protection measures against COVID-19 were required.

Now tell me, have you ever been to the Sugar Loaf Cable Car? If not, do you intend to?

XoXo, Analice.
